The Services Preparatory Institute (SPI) Aurangabad stands as one of the most prestigious and respected defence preparatory institutions in India, established with a noble mission—to inspire, guide, and prepare young boys to join the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers. With a glorious legacy of nearly five decades, SPI has shaped hundreds of future leaders who are serving the nation with pride, courage, and dedication.
The Beginning of SPI Aurangabad
With the vision of motivating the youth of Maharashtra to join the Defence Services in the Officer Cadre, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of Lt Gen SPP Thorat (Retd), Kirti Chakra, Padmashree, DSO, D’Lit. Based on the recommendations of this committee, the unique Services Preparatory Institute was established in Aurangabad in 1977, with the primary aim of preparing young boys physically, mentally, and academically for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla.
From its very foundation, SPI was envisioned as a feeder institution to NDA, INA, OTA, and other defence academies, offering structured training and mentorship for defence aspirants.

The central aim of SPI remains unchanged since inception:
“To encourage the youth of Maharashtra to join the Armed Forces as officers.”

Organisation & Governance of SPI
SPI functions under the General Administration Department (Desk-28) of Mantralaya, Government of Maharashtra.
The institute is headed by a Director, who is a Retired Armed Forces Officer of the rank Lt Colonel or above (or equivalent rank from the Indian Navy/Indian Air Force).
A Governing Body (GB), appointed by the Government, oversees policies, training standards, and administrative functioning. Most members are senior retired defence officers, ensuring mentorship, discipline, and military tradition.
The institute has an experienced team of 24 staff members, many of whom are retired Armed Forces personnel, who handle training, discipline, academics, and welfare of cadets.
